From the Executive Director

Dear Friends,

PCDA is indeed a special place. We are the only center in Los Angeles to offer such a broad range of therapy services for children from infants to young adults! Our feeding services for children learning to eat is the only clinic with a full range of disciplines working together as a team. Our teen club and young adults programs are the only programs that build social skills and life skills through activities in the community and a focus on social-emotional development. In our early intervention Building Blocks program, our SEDI- school age program, our social skills groups, music therapy and in so many other programs, we are setting the standard of care. And, we are the only center outside of universities with a mission to train new professionals! In all we do, we utilize the DIRFloortime approach. This framework guides a comprehensive understanding of child development, and includes parents as true partners in our work. This month, I invite you to learn more about the DIRFloortime approach through our orientation program, or simply come by for a tour. And, I invite you to support PCDA through your donations. As a non-profit organization, we rely on the generosity of the community to make this all possible, and your gift will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Diane Cullinane, M.D.
Executive Director

In the Spotlight

“We are pleased to acknowledge that Tommy W., one of our former clients, has just earned his Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree from Glendale Community College. Tommy majored in Geography and he plans to attend California State University of Los Angeles in the fall to continue his education and pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Tommy joined a PCDA social skills group in 1998 at the age of five. Back then, Tommy was insular and had difficulty communicating with his peers and to a lesser extent, interacting with adults. PCDA’s therapists used “Floortime” methods to encourage interaction amongst the children.

Tommy is now twenty two years old, enjoys playing the piano and speaking French with his piano instructor. He also speaks Spanish fluently thanks to a lifetime relationship with his loving Nanny from El Salvador. Tommy’s developed independence will allow him to walk down the block from his house and take public transportation to and from CSLA. It’s great to see how professional assistance, family support and Tommy’s hard work and perseverance have turned this once insular child into a successful young man.”

Nutrient of the Month:
Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, is one of many B-vitamins that play an important role in the body’s ability to produce energy. It is also very important for heart and brain health. Plants do not make this vitamin, so most foods rich in vitamin B12 come from animals, including fish, beef, chicken, turkey, eggs, and cow’s milk products. Try mashing this egg salad recipe together with your children and enjoy it as a unique way to meet your vitamin B12 needs.
